Free Mind Entrepreneur Network is a Philadelphia-based non-profit enterprise that encourages, promotes, highlights, supports, trains, employs, and provides opportunities for formerly incarcerated individuals. The enterprise works with returning citizens who learned trade skills while incarcerated and supports their re-entry and transition to become successful independent contractors and employees. Our services include coaching, mental health care, financial wellness, and technical training. We also are working with currently incarcerated individuals to assist them with training and support.
Stacey Torrance, Executive Director, is a former juvenile lifer. He went to prison at age 14 and served 30 years of a life without parole-sentence before he was released from prison in 2017. His resentencing and release was enabled by recent Supreme Court rulings.
While in prison, Stacey earned his GED and completed 9 college level courses in psychology, sociology, law and criminal justice. He was trained in electrical work, carpentry and plumbing. He worked as an electrician for more than 18 years.
Since his return, Stacey has overcome the hardships of unemployment and homelessness. He eventually found work with the Labors’ Local 232. Since 2019, he has worked as a full-time building maintenance staff person. In addition to his maintenance position, he recently worked as a residential subcontractor on a variety of jobs involving electrical, carpentry, and other trades.
Stacey has an unusual ability to operate and succeed in two worlds, both behind the walls and outside them. He understands the erosion of moral agency that happens in prison, the shrinking of the world, and the impact of 24/7 surveillance. He also understands the impulse to make up for lost time after getting out. The feeling that you have to do everything all at once, the overwhelming challenges of poverty, building family and professional relationships. He is driven to work with returning citizens to ensure they succeed.
